Burro di Karite'

The Karité tree has a high trunk and belongs to the family of the Saponaceous, it ranks up to15 meters high and measures 1 meter of diameter. Its very thick bark protects from fires of the savanna. This tree has a spherical and emispherical foliage with many branches and looks a bit like an oak; the leaves, coming in locks on the the short branches, are quite long.
The Karité blossoms from December to March and its flowers, green to dark yellow, smelling intensively, blooms in groups at the extremity of the branches.
The fruits, egg shaped, (5-8 cm.long, 3-4 cm.large) looks like the avocado, but smaller and with a soft, sweet , eatable pulp. It usually bears one seed ( sometimes two) , dark red, wrapped in a thin and glossy shell. Inside the seed we find one pale white almond, very solid and greasy that will yeald , after transformation, the famous “ karité butter”.
The tree grows wild in the savanna of sub-tropical Africa ( from Senegal, Gambia and Guinea ahead to central Africa through Mali, Northern Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Northern Ghana, Togo, Benin and Nigeria) in a tropical climate  carachterized a season of rain followed a long season of drought. The Karité tree has a very long life,up to 200 years but it grows very slowly: it gives its fruits at the age of 15 years , produces its rich harvest from 25 years and reaches its full production from 50 to 100 years of age. Medium production  of a single tree  ranges from 15 to 20 kilos of fresh fruits of which we get 3-4 kilos of seeds.

Harvest takes place midJune to mid September during the season of rain, when the ripe fruits fall to ground spontaneously. During the gathering many precautions must be taken: to prevent the fruits from germination it is essential that it doesn’t remain on the ground too long.
If germination have started this will reduce the productivity  of oil and increases its acidity level. If trampled, fruits start to mould very easily.

Once concluded the harvest, preparation must start immediately because the following dry season would ruin the product.
Harvesting and making  butter are typical jobs of women in West Africa, that is why they say “      “. The crop is typically carried in big basket or calebasses  placed on the head. First women pick fruits from the trees surrounding the village then  to reach the other trees they must walk long and hard pathways.  If it is a good year each collector may easily bring home up to 40 kilos a day.  Anyway to make approximately 20 kilos of butter they must collect  many hundreds of kilos of fruit.

The peculiarity of Karité tree and all the precautions to be taken in collecting the crop have discouraged any intention of creating huge plantations also because the capacity of germination is no good and the fruit come to full ripeness after five months. All this makes the karitè trees and the butter obtained   very precious items.

Perché acquistare il burro di karité delle donne di ASVT Dollebou?

(Burkina Faso)
  1. perché così si sostiene un gruppo di 150 donne che si sono associate per migliorare il loro stato sociale ed acquisire migliori diritti nel loro paese;
  2. perché così si sostiene un meccanismo di crescita di queste donne favorendo la pace e la solidarietà e soprattutto la loro sopravvivenza economica e sociale;
  3. perché è un valore aggiunto prediligere un gruppo femminile di produzione collegato ad una giovane e dinamica impresa in Italia (Il Brusafer di Mattie, Torino) rispetto al preferire i soliti canali di acquisti dalle grandi imprese di cosmetici (anche serie) che si combattono sul mercato internazionale con martellanti pubblicità che generano, in linea di massima, alti costi dei loro prodotti;
  4. perché il burro di karitè puro di ASVT Dollebou ha raggiunto un livello qualitativo almeno paragonabile (se non migliore) di quello delle più efficienti imprese europee o di altri paesi nel settore della cosmetica;
  5. perché ASVT Dollebou ha saputo far crescere la qualità dei suoi prodotti ed adotta tradizionalmente semplici meccanismi di controllo della produzione nei punti cardine (scelta delle noci perché solo partendo da ottime noci si crea un buon burro di karité, torrefazione delle mandorle come fanno i grandi produttori di caffè, rimozione dalle impurità ed attenzione al colore e sapore del prodotto come fanno i mastri birrai). Per inciso queste cose le delegate di ASVT Dollebou le hanno apprese con la loro attenta e continua frequentazione di Slow Food e Terra Madre a partire dalla prima edizione del 2004;
  6. perché ASVT Dollebou certifica per ogni stock di produzione con adeguate prove chimiche, batteriologiche ed analisi organolettiche la qualità dei suoi prodotti. Tutte le prove effettuate sono risultate pienamente conformi alla normativa europea;
  7. perché ASVT Dollebou vende questo stesso burro di karitè nel Sahel a scopo alimentare;
  8. perché la crescita qualitativa di ASVT Dollebou riguarda anche la preparazione dei barattoli o dei contenitori per il prodotto, e l'etichetta rispetta la normativa europea INCI. Questo si è ulteriormente rafforzato con la gestione da parte di Il Brusafer di tutto il processo di archiviazione, inscatolamento automatico di materiale puro e delle creme, barattoli di alta qualità con etichette complete e a normativa INCI, gestione delle scadenze;
  9. perché nel corso di Terra Madre 2018 ed in tutte le edizioni precedenti fin dalla prima edizione del 2004 ASVT Dollebou dal Burkina Faso e dall’Italia, ha partecipato con i prodotti di ASVT Dollebou (sia il burro di karité puro che le creme). Questi prodotti sono buoni, belli e fanno bene a chi le usa ed anche perché hanno un prezzo “giusto” che tiene conto e valorizza il lavoro femminile;
  10. perché ASVT Dollebou ha registrato per tutto il Sahel il suo marchio KARINA e perché Il Brusafer è un’azienda riconosciuta secondo la normativa UE sui Cosmetici. Tutto questo è una garanzia a favore del consumatore.
